Definitions
Virus = A program or piece of code written by a cracker that "infects" one or more other programs by embedding a copy of itself in them. It then spreads from location to location by any means of connecting computers, like the Internet, Email, and Networks. When these programs are executed, the embedded virus is executed too, thus propagating the "infection". This normally happens invisibly without user knowledge or permission. However, you can't catch a virus just from reading an e-mail message. File attachments can carry viruses, but not the actual e-mail itself, so just don't download file attachments from anyone you don't know or trust. Fixed with Program's from this list.
Spyware = Also called adware, spyware is any software that covertly gathers user information through the user's Internet connection without his or her knowledge, usually for advertising purposes. Spyware applications are typically bundled as a hidden component of freeware or shareware programs that can be downloaded from the Internet. Once installed, the spyware monitors user activity on the Internet and transmits that information in the background to someone else. Spyware can also gather information about e-mail addresses and even passwords and credit card numbers. Because spyware is using memory and system resources, the applications running in the background can lead to system crashes or general system instability.Fixed with Malwarebytes & Spybot Search & Destroy.
Cookies = The main purpose of cookies is to identify users and possibly prepare customized Web pages for them. When you enter a Web site using cookies, you may be asked to fill out a form providing such information as your name and interests. This information is packaged into a cookie and sent to your Web browser which stores it for later use. The next time you go to the same Web site, your browser will send the cookie to the Web server. The server can use this information to present you with custom Web pages. So, for example, instead of seeing just a generic welcome page you might see a welcome page with your name on it. Cookies are also ways of tracking sales from ad's that you click on, it tells the site your going to that you came from a partner site and who get the credit for the link. this means that a cookie can be both good (your online banking) and bad (tracking your web surfing).Fixed with Malwarebytes & Spybot Search & Destroy.
Installer Pop-Up = I think these should be considered a virus. These are popup's saying "you need to install" something, with a "Yes" or "No" button. these are normally additional search bars for your Internet Explorer. the problem is that these try to access the internet without asking your permission. For modem users this means that your connection manager keeps trying to dial out. for cable/DSL users, this means that a program is running in the background telling people about your web habits and hogging up your bandwidth. Either way, this is making a connection to the net, opening a backdoor for virus's to come in without you even knowing. Fixed with Malwarebytes & Spybot Search & Destroy.
